Milwaukee, WI – June 6, 2009 – Each year over 20,000 women are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. It may come as a shock that nearly 15,000 of these women will die within 12 months of diagnosis. If discovered early, there are a number of treatments that can halt the spread of or even cure Ovarian Cancer. Only a lack of awareness of key symptoms prevents the medical community from reducing the high mortality rate; Laura’s Smile Mile hopes to bring this awareness to the women of Milwaukee. The Third Annual Laura’s Smile Mile begins at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Veteran’s Park on the Milwaukee Lakefront. In addition, this year the event will include the Giggle Gallop (kids’ race, ages 8 and under) starting at 11:30AM. The event is held in honor of 28 year-old Laura David who has been bravely battling Ovarian Cancer for the past five years. Despite numerous surgeries and many painful and exhausting treatments, Laura has managed to keep a smile on her face. The event, a 5K run/walk, is open to anyone who would like to support ovarian cancer research and education. Last year’s event drew over 300 participants, and race director Denielle Beilfuss expects an even larger turnout this year. “Our goal is to have 500 participants this year, as it is such an important cause and a great way to show support for Laura and others who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.” Proceeds from the event will go to the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance (WOCA). WOCA’s mission is to educate about early warning signs of ovarian cancer, support Wisconsin women and families in their battle against ovarian cancer and supports advocacy efforts of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance to secure additional funds and advance research towards a cure. On June 6, pull the running shoes out of the closet and head to the Lakefront. Support the Ovarian Cancer Alliance’s quest to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of this terrible disease. And help Laura keep a smile on her face as she continues to battle Ovarian Cancer.
