New York Too Good Against Improved Bombers

Another beautiful day in Milwaukee last weekend as the Bombers hosted New York.  The two clubs have met twice at nationals trading one-point victories and a spot in the grand final.  Milwaukee had high hopes that the shortcomings that have plagued the club this season would subside bringing a much needed win.

The first term opened with Milwaukee firing all cylinders. The Bombers’ midfield seemed to match up well against a much taller and Aussie Magpie side.  Milwaukee drew first blood with a behind, New York answered scoring a major but Milwaukee quickly countered with a major of their own.  It looked like another close one at the end of the term with New York leading by a single point.

Sadly, the rest of the match was all Magpies and reminiscent of the season opener against Toronto. Milwaukee just didn’t have the depth to match up man-to-man around the ground but showed great improvement in intensity, discipline, disposal and making the transition from backline to forward line. The Bombers never gave up the fight though and the club’s rookies put in solid performances around the ground. A surge in the fourth quarter might have put a comeback in reach but never materialized due to inaccurate goal kicking.

As for the rest of the season, the Bombers desperately need a handful of victories to keep a Division 1 spot in the works. This is still very much a possibility but the clock is ticking. Respect and a MAAFL title hang in the balance.
August 25, the Bombers (both men and women) take on Atlanta at Brown Deer Park.
