Footy Work

This spring, young residents of Wauwatosa, Wis., got the opportunity to play by a different set of rules when the Wauwatosa Recreation Department offered its first-ever Australian rules football program for youths in grades 3 and up.

Wauwatosa's five-week program was build around USFootyKids (Australian rules football is commonly referred to as “footy”), a youth initiative of the United States Australian Football League (USAFL).  The USAFL is an amateur grassroots organization dedicated to the development of Australian football in the United States.  Aussie rules football, that country’s most popular sport, is played on fields almost twice the size of American football fields by two teams of 18 players and encompasses elements of soccer, basketball and volleyball.

Lessons conducted by players and coaches from the Milwaukee Bombers, a USAFL member club, focused on footy skills and rules, as well as on the game’s positive aspects of teamwork, friendship, fitness and community.  Also, program participants received a backpack including an Australian football, a cap, a T-shirt, a CD, a guidebook and an Under Armour® wristband.
